At Grace, one of our core values is to pursue authentic community. We want everyone to experience genuine fellowship and share their lives with other believers. In Ecclesiastes 4, we are reminded, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their efforts. For if either falls his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to lift him up.”
If I’m being honest, my heart is prone to wander. My flesh is susceptible to temptation. I still fall, but I have several groups of men that I have authentic community with, and provide that “lifting up”. We are there for each other; We hold nothing back and are brutally honest. It’s accountability, but it is so much more than that - it’s brotherhood. I’ve had groups of men around me like this since my college days, and I don’t even want to imagine where I’d be if I didn’t have them.
Together we spur one another on to abide in Christ through the Scriptures, prayer, memorization, and worship. We challenge each other to love our wives and lead our families. I know I am a better husband, father and reflection of Christ because of it. We inspire each other to share our faith and reach the lost.
Sunday mornings are my favorite, but it's hard to experience this kind of depth during a worship service. On Sunday mornings, we sit shoulder to shoulder, but when I’m with my brothers, we sit face to face. That’s why we have groups. I’m involved with several discipleship groups and a community life group with my wife. I’m deeply thankful for these people, and I know they feel the same.
If you don’t have this yet, I urge you to pursue it. Don’t fall without someone there to lift you up. Don’t go through this life without brothers or sisters in Christ who know you and love you.
