I love books… most all books! I avoid very little in my reading so long as it is well written, honest, and, if possible, beautiful. I love Tolkien, Lewis, but also Jean Craighead George and Jack London. Those are books, among many others, that I read in what spare time I carve out.
I am very blessed to be able to read books about our great faith for my job, either for personal/professional development or as a resource for people in our church.
I have learned about or found a few books recently that I am very excited about reading! I am not sharing these as verified resources; in fact, it’s the exact opposite! I am putting these new titles out there to see if any of you have read them or would want to read them! I wanted to share these titles with you to see what you all have read, and to give you a small window into the resources that could be in our people's repertoire soon. I am also going to share some that I have read, along with brief reviews, in case they strike your fancy.
Yet to read (but Excited):
A Meal With Jesus by Tim Chester
Dangerous Calling by Paul David Tripp
The Contemplative Pastor by Eugene H. Peterson
Trade You Cares for Calm by Max Lucado
Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible by Dietrich Bonhoeffer (with intro by Walter Bruggemann)
Deliberate Simplicity by Dave Browning
Reviews:
The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind by Mark A. Noll
This is a perennial favorite of mine. It highlights the need for Evangelicalism to stay engaged in the intellectual and academic pursuits of historic Christianity without ignoring the wonderful heart of personal love for Jesus that exists in our stream of the faith.
With by Skye Jathani
Like very few other books, this one makes you feel like your heart is completely exposed in all of the incorrect ways you have thought about God, without ever making you feel lucky or under judgment for doing so. If you want some of the greatest encouragement you have ever received to live life WITH Jesus, then this book is for you!
The Cure by Lynch, McNicol, and Thrall
If you want to get a look at and feel encouraged to live life honestly and without the masks that we often use to hide our true selves from others, I couldn’t send you to this book fast enough. There is a choice we are all presented with: to live masked or to live openly and honestly in front of others. This book will encourage you to feel free to choose the latter.
